Kankakee Sands
Description
Kankakee Sands has been called a “prairie jewel in progress.” The 8,400 acres in northwest Indiana, host a bison herd, hundreds of bird species, and more than 600 species of native plants that once covered Indiana.
Working with the Nature Conservancy, we upgraded the visitor’s center with a new gazebo, vault toilet, new signage, new viewing deck, and an improved parking lot. We also improved the Bison Viewing Area with new paths, a viewing deck, and an improved parking lot. The upgrades now allow even more visitors to enjoy this prairie and imagine a time before settlers moved into the area.
